On a plateau 350 meters above the northern Mindanao city of Cagayan de Oro, famed architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. has created a little masterpiece of a golf course called Pueblo de Oro.
Eighteen holes of golf flow most naturally across what was once 80 hectares of stony marginal pastureland a few kilometers below the Cagayan de Oro airport. Wide fairways fan out classically from the clubhouse site, weaving their way along broad ridges lined by deep ravines.
For years, “tough par, easy bogey” has been the cornerstone of the “Jones Philosophy of Course Design”. At Pueblo, he does not let us down, nor does he let us forget that we are mere mortals, struggling on this base earth at a game created by the gods for their amusement. One of the factors that determines the level of greatness of a golf course is memorability and Pueblo de Oro has this in spades. Each hole is strongly sculpted, accented by multiple bunkers, carved out clearly against the lush vegetation, rolling Tifton fairways and Tif-dwarf greens.
There is a great variety in the layout. A ridged green fronted by a pond for a par-3 Second is followed by a drive-able short par-4 Third hole that will bite you like a mean snake if disturbed, thus the nickname “Pretty Poison”.
All in all, Pueblo de Oro presents a rather fair challenge and an enjoyable experience for golfers of all levels. Showing ultimate respect for the site, Jones, Jr. managed to build the 6,872 Yards Par-72 course without excessive earth-moving, allowing the land rather than hi imagination to dictate. Frankie Miñoza, the Philippines premiere golfer, has chosen Pueblo as his home course, thus, a very big showroom for his trophies is built.
